The World We Have: A Buddhist Approach to Peace and Ecology, by Thich Nhat Hanh

From Publishers Weekly

Past the age of 80 now, the indefatigable Vietnamese Buddhist monk Nhat Hanh continues teaching. As peace flows from Buddhist teachings, so too does an environmental ethic rooted in awareness and interrelatedness. Nhat Hanh's engaged Buddhism, a Buddhist school that emphasizes social responsibility, takes on the task of preserving and protecting the earth. A special bodhisattva (enlightened being)—Dharanimdhara, the Earth Holder—will guide human efforts to guard and restore the natural world. No effort is too small; an Earth Peace Treaty Commitment Sheet in an appendix lists nearly 60 easy behaviors to minimize ecological impact. The Zen monk's often poetic voice redeems what might otherwise seem repetitive writing or simplistic views; seeing with the eye of the elephant queen provides deep insight. A foreword by environmental journalist Alan Weisman (The World Without Us) adds a fresh framework for understanding Nhat Hanh's Buddhist insights about interrelationships with the natural world. This is an urgent call from a revered spiritual teacher about the moral imperative to treat the earth with respectful awareness. (Oct.) A few years ago I moved to Chicago and began my practice with a new sangha , but with same root teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. I kept in touch with one of my old sangha buddies until about two years after I had moved. Every time we talked, she would tell me how depressed she was so during one of our last conversations I simply asked "What are you doing to help yourself?" I didn't hear from her a while and when we spoke again she was enraged that I had asked her that question. When I would not apologize for asking the question and began pontificating, I was told never to call her again a few days later. The point of this story is that while I thought recognized her suffering, I did not acknowledge her suffering, nor did I truly recognize it. While I was trying to share some liberation from a similar experience, I was not skilful. I realized that I really had no business introducing a bold new vision to her about her well being as mine was in great need of improvement at the time as well.I was unaware, uninformed, and my actions did not reflect a true compassionate nature. I realized all of this while reading this book by our root teacher and reflecting on this experience since I have since moved back from Chicago. The message in this book is ancient: care for the environment, live in peace, interconnected with one another and find peace within yourself. However, the message still constitutes a bold vision for the modern world to a reader, such as myself, who sees a pattern in all forms of U.S. media and economic exploitation that reinforce to our peers, our children and our parents that these ideas are too naive, too simple, and just plain bad for our long term welfare. The ideas in this book may appear revolutionary and brand new because they strongly conflict with our near term desires and this desire is exploited by economic interests. While Chomsky may have made enemies by showing us how the military industrial complex "manufactures consent" in democratic and free societies to go to war through fear and propaganda, the same principles apply to issues such as global warming, energy, biotechnology and so on. So yes, this book is pretty refreshing because it offers hope.Additionally, the author really connects with the reader by recognizing the reader's suffering and how it plays into our collective suffering and how our actions abusive against the earth are also forms of abusing our future children and their children and our ancestors both genetically and spiritually. We are offered simple solutions in a skilful and compassionate way for engaging ourselves and finding a liberation of sorts, so that we can in turn engage others in what constitutes a skillful call to action in a compassionate and mindful way.Pay the farmer, or pay the doctor. When there are no more farms, there will be no more doctors. We will be left with no one to pay and perhaps we will attend to other matters. Don't take my word for it. I have already admitted my lack of skill in communicating such matters, read the book for yourself and rely on your own experience.

This is a book that must be read if we are to save our Mother Earth and have peace in our world.

Great product!

I had heard of this teacher in my other readings so when I heard of this book I decided it was time to find out what others we talking about. He is a MASTER in the finest sense of the term. His words are for all of us, regardless of religious affiliation. These words are PERFECT for today's modern life.

This book helped me deal with the massive environmental destruction caused by our way of life and US Corporations around the world. The anger and rage one feels when becoming aware of these violations to life itself can be overwhelming. Here is a sane and thoughtful personal way to cope. A realistic and enlightened view of reality that can be calmly transmitted to those around us. When conditions are right a new culture will be born.

Our beloved Buddhist teacher just keeps churning-out great, mindful books, text after text, year after year. I think he is now 84; still enlightening us.

good one

This book is probably the best approach to "Peace and Ecology" that I have read. It is not new, but it has held true and is so "right on" at present time. It is uplifting and encouraging, but also "tells it like it is." I highly recommend it. It's a book to re-read often.

This book is about the principles behind the open government data movement and its development in the United States. The movement is framed as the application of Big Data to civics, where Big Data is not just the size of data but the ability for data to change the way we understand its subject. Topics include principles of open government data, the history of the movement, applications to transparency and civic engagement, a brief legal history, data quality, civic hacking, and paradoxes in transparency.

This book is organized into chapters covering the movement and its history, examples and a typology of open government data applications, a brief legal history of open government data, principles and recommendations for creating open government data, and limitations in the use of data for government transparency. The appendix includes excerpts of open data policy language and model language.

This is one of the best books for learning proof-based geometry. Things build up steadily to more complicated problems. This also is not insanely expensive because the authors included pictures (obviously because it's geometry) without spending a lot of time on high-detail pictures that are nice to look at but ultimately just add to the price of the book without giving added clarification of the material. If you're looking for one of those textbooks that has all the vocabulary terms highlighted in yellow and defined in the margins (so that kids answer worksheets by skipping to the highlighted words and just put that word in the blanks without processing anything), look elsewhere. This book provides real challenge and focuses on the application of the material rather than just remembering vocabulary.

This would probably be the best of Geometry textbook that one can buy, There is no relentless story telling, nor nonsense "applications". Each chapter goes straight to the points, followed by discussions, practices, and exams.I have to agree with some of the reviewers suggesting that this one is very difficult and challenging. even for students who happens to be placed on honor or advanced levels. In all, I think that this book would be appropriate if kids have access constantly to very well knowledgeable individual who knows math very well such as parents or top notch high school math teachers. If not, I would suggest others.

I purchased this book as a reference book for my technical library, but I am familiar with it through an earlier incantation back when I took honors Geometry more than 35 years ago. The Geometry book I used was part of the Houghton Mifflin Modern School Mathematics /Structure and Method series of texts used by my school district in the middle 1970's.Going through this book, I noted quite a few similarities between this version and the early 1970's edition I used in school. First and foremost this is a proof based book and a lot of time is spent presenting the axioms and building foundations for the student to be able to reason his/her way through two-column proofs. This is by no means an easy book, but it navigable by a diligent student who is willing to put forth the effort. Like the structure and Method series of texts, the exercises are good and tiered to the level of the student with A exercises for everybody, B exercises for your better students and C exercises students for top notch students looking for a challenge.I also found that time spent early on in getting the feel/mindset for the proof based approach of geometry paves the way as you work your way through the book. Once you get the feel, I found it was possible to read the book and work ahead of the class without terribly much effort.I have had the opportunity to see some of the texts that pass for Mathematics today. Unlike the watered-down texts that are foisted on us by bureaucratic decree. this book presents the subject matter of Geometry in a rigorous manner for the serious and gifted student considering a career in mathematics or physical sciences.

I have been teaching geometry for over thirty years. I've used this book or an earlier incarnation of it for most of that time. Although the book has it's weaknesses, it is overall thorough and systematic. Negative reviews of this textbook are based primarily on a comparison of this book to watered-down texts now more popular with schools. I also tutor and one of my students explained to me that his school uses a different text, because that text concentrates on material covered on the SAT. I've had students who transferred to another school come back and tell me I made geometry unnecessarily complicated. His new school had an easier text. As another reviewer noted, the textbook committees of many schools are primarily concerned with protecting the reputation of the school by passing students and NOT with the education of the student. They perpetuate mediocrity. Better schools in my area use this textbook, but most often it's only used for "honors" classes. This is a difficult text, not because it's a bad book, but because it presents a high quality, proof-based exposure to geometry. For years I've been hearing fellow educators tout how courses expose students to higher order thinking. The fact is, education in the United States, especially math education, does not expose students to higher order thinking, but substitutes mechanical processes for true understanding, and politically correct processes like projects and group work for rigor. Schools now use group tests and quizzes so students have a better chance of passing, not a better chance of learning. This begins back at the lowest levels of math education. Geometry is usually the first course of any sort where the student truly has to think. In algebra (not the way it should be taught, but the way it is taught), students memorize mechanical processes without understanding why the process works. If they remember the steps required for a particular type of problem, and get their arithmetic right, they get a correct answer. When a student creates a two-column proof in geometry, reasoning from limited information to a final conclusion, no teacher or text can teach a student to always get a right answer. Getting a right answer involves actual thought and may take time and repeated analysis.Geometry is a language intensive branch of mathematics. If students don't acquire the vocabulary of the study (definitions, postulates and theorems), they can't "think" about the problem. It's like trying to learn a foreign language without learning vocabulary. This book does a very good job of laying out this "vocabulary", with a few exceptions. The authors of the book have made the book weaker gradually over the last twenty years. I believe they have done so in an attempt to make the course easier. Unfortunately, they've merely muddied the water. Incongruities and inaccuracies have crept in over the years, but the text still remains the best available.I suspect the publishers will be dropping this textbook from it's catalog. It hasn't been updated since 1999, although this is unclear. When I last checked with the publisher, they had not made any plans to update it. It is actually beneficial if they don't update it, I suppose, since when they have in more recent years, the book has become of less quality. Finally, if you have a child taking geometry with this book, count your blessings. Help your child to be successful by having them memorize the vocabulary, postulates and theorems as a first step to understanding. Additionally, encourage them not to give up and keep thinking.

This is the correct solution key for the year 2000 edition of the Jurgensen Geometry text which I purchased earlier. I purchased the book as a supplement to my son's high school accelerated geometry class, because I needed a text with more challenging problems than his school text. I like having the solutions, rather than just the answers, and this covers the even & odd problems. So I don't have to work them all out. I highly recommend this. I also purchased Geometry for Enjoyment and Challenge by Richard Rhoad. Together they make a comprehensive intro to Geometry.

This is not a particularly good text. I bought it because I'm tutoring my girlfriend's daughter and this is the text her school requires. Speaking as an instructional designer, I can say that it's not well organized, and it frequently does a poor job of explaining basic concepts. If you have a choice, look for another book.
